Bring back an old favorite

Had the opportunity to make an old family recipe just the other day. I had forgotten how good this basic congealed salad tasted, but more than anything it was a stunner on the buffet table. I used a silicone star mold, but that was only the beginning. I took a little mini vase and stuck it down into the inverted tube hole, filled it with fresh lilacs and a few sprigs of long violet leaves for contrast, sprinkled violet heads randomly on the salad. Wow! It was easy, tasty, and very much a do-ahead dish. The Silicone Star is the "star" for this Winner.

Even the Dandelions long roots aerate the soil and enable the plant to accumulate minerals, which are added to the soil when the plant dies.
Not only are dandelions good for your soil, they are good for your health. A serving of uncooked dandelion leaves contains 280 percent of an adult's daily requirement of beta carotene as well as more than half the requirement of vitamin C. Dandelions are also rich in vitamin A.
Dandelions are also used as herbal remedies. The white sap from the stem and root is used as a topical remedy for warts. The whole plant is used as a diuretic and liver stimulant. Believe it or not, I fed my horse dandelion roots to help her laminitis.

So before you toss them, throw the leaves in a salad, or lightly braise them. They are here for a purpose. Embrace them, don't totally curse them.

(Redditch) - Having tried many devices including a whetting stone I did not hold out a lot of hope for this one. You do need a very smooth surface to stick in on but it does exactly what it says. The blades are now razor sharp. The only one it has had a problem with so far is a de-boning knife which is very recessed at the blade hilt - it's not possible to sharpen the first inch of it. All the standard cooks knives are like new again - the Sabatiers can split hairs.
